Senate’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill: Big Step Toward the Protection of Children Alone

Washington, DC, April 17, 2013 — Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) applauds the Senate's Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill introduced today for its significant protections for children who have come to the United States alone. The bill mandates the Attorney General to appoint counsel for unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings.

Helping Women and Families in Need Through New Association of Women Lawyers Pro Bono Project

The National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) is launching a new pro bono project with KIND (Kids in Need of Defense), and the American Bar Association Children's Rights Litigation Committee to identify pro bono opportunities for NAWL members to help protect the rights of women and families.

KIND Launches Microsoft Challenge Campaign in Response to Child Migration Emergency: No Child Should Stand Alone

Washington, DC November 15, 2012

In response to the historic influx to the United States of children alone in vital need of services, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is launching its first-ever challenge grant campaign to raise $150,000 to meet a generous offer from Microsoft to match dollar-for-dollar funds KIND raises to this level. Approximately 14,000 unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children sought protection in the U.S. this year, more than double the number who entered last year. Most came to flee human rights abuses, armed conflict and other violence, human trafficking, and severe economic deprivation.

Microsoft Donates $3 Million to Help Children Alone in the United States

The Microsoft Corporation has donated $3 million to help children who come to the United States without a parent or legal guardian find pro bono lawyers to represent them in immigration court proceedings. The $3 million grant,over three years, is to Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), which was founded by Microsoft and Angelina Jolie in late 2008. National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Partners with KIND

Washington, DC- February 22, 2010

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) has formed a first-of-its-kind partnership with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a nonprofit organization founded by Microsoft Corporation and actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie, to provide pro bono representation of immigrant children who are in the United States without a parent or legal guardian. Approximately 8,000 unaccompanied children come to the U.S. each year, are placed in U.S. custody, and face removal proceedings. More than half of these children do not have a lawyer. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a Washington, D.C.-based non-governmental organization (NGO) whose mission is to ensure pro bono legal counsel to unaccompanied immigrant children in the United States, today announced the appointment of its founding Executive Director, Wendy Young. KIND was established by Microsoft and Angelina Jolie in October 2008, along with a host of leading law firms and corporate law departments.
