National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Partners with KIND

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) has formed a first-of-its-kind partnership with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a nonprofit organization founded by Microsoft Corporation and actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie, to provide pro bono representation of immigrant children who are in the United States without a parent or legal guardian. Approximately 8,000 unaccompanied children come to the U.S. each year, are placed in U.S. custody, and face removal proceedings. More than half of these children do not have a lawyer. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a Washington, D.C.-based non-governmental organization (NGO) whose mission is to ensure pro bono legal counsel to unaccompanied immigrant children in the United States, today announced the appointment of its founding Executive Director, Wendy Young. KIND was established by Microsoft and Angelina Jolie in October 2008, along with a host of leading law firms and corporate law departments. KIND welcomes the Obama administration’s decision to grant temporary protected status (TPS) to Haitians in the United States. TPS will provide these Haitians a safe haven while Haiti struggles to recover and rebuild.
“This is the right thing to do for Haitians – both in the U.S. and in Haiti – and we thank the administration for taking this vital step,” says KIND Executive Director Wendy Young. “There is no question that it is not safe for anyone to return to Haiti at this time – nor in the near future. This is particularly true for children as they are most vulnerable to trafficking, exploitation, violence and abuse which are rife in emergency situations.”

HNBA-KIND Partnership to Help Unaccompanied Children in Legal Proceedings

The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) and Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) announced today that they have formed a partnership to help provide pro bono representation to children who come to the United States without a parent or legal guardian.
